Valium During Pregnancy & Breastfeeding

Diazepam (Valium) may lead to adverse side effects. Hereby, breastfeeding women are usually advised either to stop breastfeeding or to stop Valium intake. Exposure to Valium through the breast milk can result in the following side effects for the child: sedation, drowsiness, weight loss, feeding-related problems and even lethargy. Since the half-life of diazepam are long, breastfeeding timing with respect to the dosage is of no benefit in terms of reducing infant exposure. Valium effects on the breastfed child are not fully known, hence the manufacturer does not recommend breastfeeding for patients taking Valium.
