What is actually Valium?
This medication is also called Diazepam, Ansiolin, Valeans, Tranquirit, etc. The difference is that Valium is a brand name, Diazepam is the name of an active substance, while all the other names are generic names and names of the modifications of Valium.
Valium (Diazepam) is a medication with sedative, hypnotic, anti-anxiety and some other properties (like anticonvulsant). This drug is a tranquilizer, which belongs to the group of benzodiazepines, which means it’s good when it comes to treating such problems as anxiety. But Valium is good for anti-anxiety purposes only if it’s taken in small doses. Bigger doses induce sedation, moreover, it’s often used as a help for those who have problems related to alcohol withdrawal. Valium (Diazepam) is a good sedative and tranquilizer, and that’s why it’s so popular in the United States and all over the world (it’s one of the most prescribed drugs in the USA actually).
What are the doses of Valium?
There are actually a few forms of this medication. Diazepam is available as a pill, as a liquid, as a gel (should be administered rectally), and as injections (should be injected intramuscularly). Tablets are the most popular form of this medication, and there are three dosages of these pills:
- White pills contain 2 mg of Diazepam (very popular in the United Kingdom);
- Yellow pills contain 5 mg of Diazepam;
- Blue pills contain 10 mg of Diazepam.
There are also other pills, like those with 15 mg of Diazepam (they are extended release and their effects last for a longer time).
Can Valium be dangerous?
Yes. It’s a benzodiazepine, and all the drugs of this class can sometimes be addictive and dangerous if overdose. Thus, let’s talk about the addiction that can be caused by Valium at first.
If you use Valium for a long time (more than 2-3 months), you should be extremely careful with it. Physical dependence can develop because your body develops tolerance to Valium, and you need more and more of this medication to get the same effect. It’s a real problem, and it can be extremely dangerous, so if you feel that anything is wrong, you should tell your doctor about it as soon as possible.
There are also some possible side effects, which can appear in those who take this drug. The most common effects are drowsiness and fatigue, and less reported effects are depression, headache, vertigo, nausea and others. They can be dangerous, too, so don’t forget to tell your doctor about all the problems you have.
Overdose is another possible problem for those who take Valium. Of course, it’s a dangerous state (it can lead to a respiratory depression), too, so don’t ignore the symptoms of overdose.
Another serious problem can happen if you mix Valium with some other substances, like alcohol.
Why do people actually mix Valium with alcohol?
For variety of purposes. Some people want to get high after taking such combination and some want to maximize the calming effects. The problem is, such combination can be really dangerous because the following effects can occur:
- Lack of coordination;
- Problems with memory, etc.
But the direct effects are not the most dangerous things here. The main problem is that the effects of both substances are intensified when they are taken together, and it can lead to overdose or even death. Alcohol poisoning and Valium overdosing are dangerous alone, but together they can slow your CNS down and it will lead to coma and subsequently to death. Don’t risk and don’t mix these two together — Valium and alcohol are definitely not the things that should be taken at the same time.
