What is actually Valium?
Valium is a brand name of a medication, called Diazepam. It’s a muscle relaxant, and this drug is a benzodiazepine, which means it’s extremely good at treating such problems as anxiety (and the symptoms of it) and spasms. Valium (Diazepam) is a drug with sedative and hypnotic properties, and this medication is also good when it comes to treating alcoholism. In this case, Valium works as a part of a detoxification program (it can help withdraw alcohol). Moreover, there are some off-label usages of this drug (it’s often used to relax the muscles during the process of endoscopy).
Valium (Diazepam) is an extremely powerful sedative medication. Of course, when it’s taken in small doses, it’s also very good for treating anxiety and some other problems, but its main purpose is to be a tranquilizer. And it can sometimes be a problem. Why?
Well, because, despite Valium (Diazepam) is a good sedative, it’s still a benzodiazepine. This means that, well, like all the other benzodiazepines (or “benzos”), Valium can sometimes be addictive and even dangerous.
What are the problems of Valium? Why is it dangerous?
Well, in the absolute majority of cases, Valium is an extremely safe drug, one of the safest sedatives in the world. But sometimes (again, it’s not only in case of Valium, it’s in case of all the benzodiazepines) it can be addictive. Thus, a long-term use of Valium can lead to the development of a dependence and tolerance. If you think that you develop a tolerance, you should tell you doctor about it, and he will tell you what you should do. Don’t stop taking Valium suddenly (especially if you think your body is already tolerant to it), because it can lead to serious withdrawal effects, such as tremor, nausea, pain in muscles, anxiety and insomnia. There can be even more serious symptoms, so don’t forget to tell your doctor if you think anything is wrong.
The same concerns the side effects. Valium (Diazepam) can be the reason of such side effects as:
- Pain in head;
- Problems with speech;
- Low blood pressure;
- Tremor, etc.
The same is for side effects — tell your doctor if anything is going wrong, because it’s a powerful drug and it can lead to severe problems. Among such problems we can see:
- This is a very rare effect, but elderly patients are at risk, because such cases have been reported.
- Abnormal and suicidal thoughts and behavior.
- Insomnia and even anxiety (it can be the result of a sudden stop).
The last thing you should know if you already take Valium (or just want to try) is that it’s possible to overdose with this medication. There’s a very serious danger of taking this drug, so you must be very careful with it. Don’t exceed your dose, because Valium can be dangerous in this case. Be careful and take care of yourselves.
What are the types and forms of Valium?
Well, there are lots of names of this drug. Valium (the brand one), Temazepam, Nitrazepam, Oxazepam, etc. The main difference is that, while Valium is the only brand name of the drug, all the others are generics, which means they are much cheaper, but have the same effects as Valium.
The amount of active substance, color, imprints, and packages are the main differences of these drugs from Valium. Thus, you can find a pill of benzodiazepine which would contain 2, 5, 10 or even 15 mg of this medication (you should know that the last pill is XR, extended release, which means you will feel the effects for a very long time). You can also see white, yellow and blue Valium pills, and the main thing you should know is that all of them are very good.
The other difference (and it’s the main one) is that Lorazepam will act for a longer time than the original Valium, and Midazolam is water soluble. But the thing is: all of them are extremely good, and all of them are high quality Valium generics, so you should take them exactly as Valium. And, well, you can always talk to your doctor and ask for advice. Good luck!
